![]() ![]() If you have or have ever had a narrow room at home, then you’ll be more than aware of the tricky task of making it look wider than it actually is, while desperately trying to make every corner look cozy. 'It is often thought that pattern and color cannot work in smaller spaces, but on the contrary creating layers of interest and detail with a mix of both can give a room a wonderful, enticing jewel box feel, drawing you into the space and bringing a smile.' How can I arrange a small living room? ![]() 'For example, this combination of a smaller two-seater sofa and comfy armchair, rather than one larger sofa in a straight line, creates a more welcoming and sociable dynamic, and the upholstered ottoman is a brilliant space saving option, doubling up as seating or as an additional surface for favourite books and magazines, or trays with drinks if entertaining.' 'Opting for clever furniture choices with versatile pieces will maximize on the space in smaller living rooms, creating a comfortable space that can be used to sit back and relax, as well as welcome guests,’ says Stefan Ormenisan, creative director and founder of MindTheGap. A compact space doesn't mean bland and neutral, color, pattern and print will make sure your living space is a true reflection of your personality.' 5. 'In terms of color and pattern, my ethos is always to bring in as much color and pattern as you can. This will enable you to make easier decisions on elements like the size of sofa, other upholstery pieces such as armchairs and ottomans, as well as storage furniture.' Consider who's going to use the space, how they're going to use it and plan your design around this. And be sure to include comfortable seating so that you can take breaks and relax.'With many homes becoming smaller and more compact, there are some key design considerations you should make to maximise on the space available, especially when it comes to the living room,' says Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of Kelling Designs. 'A room in which we spend a lot of time relaxing, socialising and living, it's really important to plan it to make sure it's equally practical as it is stylish. Arrange your furniture so that you have plenty of workspace and storage. Mason adds ‘If you're using the space for working, you'll want to create a functional and comfortable environment. Use mirrors to enhance small odd-shaped areas of the room so it appears more spacious.’ Slide a game table into the corner so it's separate from the conversation area. ‘Offer your guests seating options for chatting or relaxing by the fire. ‘Bring your furniture closer together to create a cozy space,’ says Aaron Lebowski, certified interior designer at Juliei Salone. How do you place furniture in a small oddly-shaped living room? If a TV is a secondary accessory of the space, it can be discreetly set on a sidewall,’ advises Lindye Galloway, founder and CCO of Lindye Galloway Studio + Shop. ‘If the sole purpose of the living room for your home or client's home is to have a cozy place to watch TV, I'd suggest putting it centered on the wall directly above the fireplace or in front of the couch for accessibility. Consider investing in a frame TV, so when it is not in use it becomes a beautiful centerpiece, showcasing your favorite art,' say Jen & Mar. Position where it can be seen from the comfiest spots of your living room, if this isn’t possible on a TV stand try mounting it on the wall. ![]() ‘Your TV should be situated away from direct sunlight, so ideally not opposite a window. Where do you put the TV in an awkward living room? Tailored cabinetry and furniture will allow you to use every inch of space available including awkward nooks, which would otherwise be left unused,’ say Jen & Mar, co-founders of Interior Fox. If you’re struggling to find a piece of furniture that fits perfectly, it’s best to go bespoke. Consider height and depth to ensure each piece doesn’t block light or protrude too far into the room, this will save on precious floor space. If your room has alcoves or a bay window, look for furniture that will fit neatly into these spaces. ‘One of the first things to consider is what pieces of furniture are required. Secondary furniture like the consoles can be kept to the edges and used for table lamps and plants. A rug will anchor the scheme, keep it neutral if your couches are bright or patterned. Two couches opposite each other will work well and they don’t have to match, add in an armchair that ties in with one of them and you’ll have a cohesive and stylish look. With a long rectangular-shaped living room it’s best to start in the middle. ![]()
